how to change new gmail themes

i do not think it is a problem for those using new standard version of gmail. just click “Settings” & at the right-most tab you will find “Themes”. just click on any theme to activate it.

but remember this option is only available to “Newer Version”. so if you are using old standard version or basic HTML you will not have this option. if you are looking to change themes or revert back to the default theme just use new standard version then. i didn’t find the option as i use older version. and fair to say, default gmail theme is more than suffice to me

this free service lets you check pr of all the internal pages of your site. if you have a blog or website just enter the url of your homepage & it will fetch the pr results of all the pages including home page & internal pages. i have searched few others but they are not working now.

what sets apart WP-SpamFree’s spam protection

i use Akismet. it stops spam but doesn’t stop annoyance. i have had to regularly delete lots of creepy spam comments with just urls or same kind of advertisements from the spam queue. not only in spam queue but some of these comments sometimes get into the regular comment moderation queue also.

then i have found WP-SpamFree plugin. it works like a firewall against this type of spam. i stopped receiving those spam comments altogether. the simplicity of use is just awesome. just upload & activate. now set a few options & sit back. you don’t have to do anything anymore. it handles everything on its own. one more thing, it doesn’t add any CAPTCHA or challenge question to comment form. so your readers don’t have to go through any extra steps.

you can use the combination of WP-SpamFree & Akismet. i use it now. but really WP-SpamFree can handle it alone. my Akismet spam queue is empty for days now.

updated recommendation: i have to update this post just within a few days because of this experience. as i have made my blog dofollow somebody commented three quick comments to three posts just to make his links dofollow. those comments were normal. but he used keyword as name.

just look at a comment that he wrote:

Thanks for making this blog dofollow! Come on, this is a valuable comment, you gotta let it through! I found this blog from a forum post, so that’s some valuable traffic.

I really like this “Leave A Comment” box, it’s quite stylish. I genuinely adore it.

i can’t allow this to my blog. WP-SpamFree couldn’t detect these comments as spam. but Akismet has caught these three comments in spam queue. that’s a relief.

so i would recommend you to use the combination of both these plugins especially if you are thinking of making your blog dofollow.

i was against making my blog dofollow as i do care about comment quality. but as i have got successful to stop spam with WP-SpamFree i am thinking of trying dofollow for this blog.

so this blog is dofollow now. i have installed Lucia’s Linky Love as it gives me more control. i can stop potential spammers by making comments from a reader dofollow after a certain number. it is set to 3 comments now. even with it i can manually nofollow a link in comment text quite easily if i wish. it seems to be good.

u comment i follow. but please do not spam & i hope you don’t make me go to nofollow again.

automatically install plugins & themes from Wordpress dashboard

for a few days i was messing with my blog theme. it is bit annoying if you need to upload theme files again & again from your hosting account, specially if you have a slow connection like mine.

i was looking for something automatic & have found One Click Plugin Updater. it is a great plugin that can install plugins & themes directly from your Wordpress admin panel. you can install them just by using the url of the zip file. it takes only a few seonds & few clicks. or you can directly upload zip file through admin panel to install it in your server.

just remember that you have to have direct file access & so make sure /wp-content/plugins/ & /wp-content/themes/ directories are writable. change file permissions if necessary.

in the plugin settings page there is an option to use FTP selecting Wordpress core module if directory is not writable. i have not used it though. if you always like to experiment with your blog this is just great for you.

how to update blog thumbnail in Technorati

i have switched to wordpress few months back. but still Technorati was showing my previous blogger thumbnail image. so i was trying to find a way to update to the latest thumbnail. searching a bit i have found that Technorati thumbnail service is managed by snap.com. in this faq page serach “update” & you will get to the particular faq about it. you will see a form & submit your blog site url to send an update request. my blog thumbnail got updated almost immediately

three resourceful dofollow blog search engines that i have tested

there are so many dofollow search engines out there now. but all of them don’t have the quantity & quality of blogs to be a good search engine. i was searching for a few good one & have found the following three that are quite resourceful:

you will find very few file hosting sites that allow you to host .ico files as favicons. you can use .png or .gif format for favicon files as some browsers support them. but IE supports only .ico file as favicon. other formats cannnot be displayed as favicon in internet explorer.

buddies can send you email using your phone number

you don’t have to bother anymore to spell out your email address to your buddies or notify them about your id change. your phone number can serve both the purposes. use CallMail to create an email address with your phone number & take advantage of this free email forwarding service. if your friend has got your phone number he will just have to send the message to urnumber@callmail.com say 1024567234@callmail.com . & it will be forwarded to your existing email account. you can use multiple email accounts & the email will be forwarded to all.

they have this service available to almost all the countries & use the Country Codes to identify the number. there is no way that one can register with your phone number. you have to verify a code that you get by sms for mobile or voice message for a landline to create your account.

if you send a mail to a number that is yet not registered the potential recipient will be notified to that number to create an account. that is cool too.

use Pingdom Tools Full page test & you can find out which exact page items are making your site slow in loading. i checked out this free test & its quite good. it imitates the way your page loads in a browser & gives you detailed information. it will load every element whether it is image, javascript, css, frame, flash or anything that is in your page & will show a graphical time chart corresponding to their individual urls. another interesting aspect is that you can change the chart order by choosing any of the below options:

File size

you will see another chart summarizing results & grouping similar page objects to show the number & size as groups. so you will get every detail that you need with the total page time to find out the culprit that is causing your site to be slow.
