On new hardware running XP, the following config worked for me ensuring the game run smoothly.  In the dosbox.conf file :

core=dynamic 
cycles=15.000 

[mixer] 
rate=22.500 
blocksize=2048 
prebuffer=500 

[dos] 
XMS=true 
EMS=false
